James Bond as an undercover Stormtrooper? Simon Pegg as a junk dealer? Believe it. The Force Awakens had many hidden cameos and clues even the most diehard of fans may have missed.
We’ve listed the top surprises from the latest Star Wars film.
Finn’s Stormtrooper number
Newcomer John Boyega’s Stormtrooper number FN-2187 may seem irrelevant, but the code is integral to the Star Wars franchise.
Creator George Lucas’s favourite film is a 1960s abstract Canadian short called 21-87, and it had a large impact on the most famous movies of all time, writes the UK’s Telegraph.
It was in 21-87 that Lucas got the idea for the Force after two people in the 10-minute film are heard talking about “some kind of force” in life, often called “God”.
Lucas also paid homage to the film in A New Hope when Princess Leia is held captive in cell 2187.
Obi-Wan and Yoda are both in The Force Awakens
J.J. Abrams included a remarkable amount of old characters into Episode 7, including Jedi masters Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda.
Missed it? We don’t blame you – the cameos were very brief.
During Rey’s powerful flashback after finding Luke Skywalker’s abandoned lightsaber, Obi-Wan Kenobi speaks to Rey about the force.
“You hear Obi-Wan at the end say, ‘Rey… these are your first steps’,” J.J. Abrams told Entertainment Weekly.
To get the voice of Kenobi, played by the late Alec Guiness, saying Rey’s name, Abrams used a clip of Guiness saying “Afraid” and spliced it with a voice over by Ewan McGregor.
Daniel Craig, Bill Hader, Simon Pegg also starred
That’s right. James Bond himself played a faceless Stormtrooper in the new film.
In the scene where Rey first masters the Force, she uses mind control to convince a Stromtrooper, played by Daniel Craig, to undo her shackles and set her free.
On movie website IMDb, he is aptly listed as Stormtrooper JB-007.
Bill Hader provides the noises for new droid BB-8, who was originally given a human voice before being deemed too creepy, wrote Vanity Fair.
Shaun of the Dead star Simon Pegg also played Unkar Plutt, the junk dealer on Rey’s planet of Jakku.
Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader nearly had a role
The spectre of Darth Vader looms large in the new film. Kylo Ren turns to his grandfather’s spirit for support as he battles his calling to give up the dark side.
Vader’s broken helmet serves in place of the dark lord, but Anakin Skywalker, originally played by Hayden Christensen, nearly had a role in the new film.
According to the UK’s Telegraph, artist Iain McCaig originally wanted to have Anakin Skywalker return as a ghost.
“If we see Anakin Skywalker, because he does flow back and forth between Darth Vader and Anakin, let’s see him as a character with a dark and light side,” McCraig wrote.
